‘Sun’s UV rays more dangerous in snow’

With snow forecast for some parts of the UK this winter, independent opticians in are warning us not to put away the sunglasses just yet. Coming together under the Eye Love My Local Independent Optician campaign, Openshaw Opticians say snow can be just as dangerous, if not more so to our eyes and in particular to the young.

During the winter, snow covered landscapes intensify the effects of reflected light, especially for children who have large pupils and extremely clear lenses that let in lots of UV rays. As a result, across a lifetime it is thought we receive 80 per cent of our exposure to UV light before the age of 18.

Despite the young being particularly vulnerable to sun damage, independent opticians point out that only 3 per cent of children regularly wear sunglasses.

A spokesman for the Eye Love My Local Independent Opticiancampaign, Paul Surridge, commented: “Children should be encouraged to wear sunglassesthroughout the year, especially during the winter.

“Sunglasses are the best protection for our eyes when exposed to sunlight.”

Acknowledging the dangers of UV rays in the winter, the Eye Love MyLocal Independent Optician campaign is encouraging both children and adults to visit their local optical practice for a regular eye test, to identify any potential problems caused by overexposure to the sun in snowy conditions.

Paul added: “Most of the sun’s damage to the eyes occurs over a long period. It is therefore vital that you maintain your eye health with regular trips to your optician. “With children at greater risk of UV damage, it’s often beneficial to visit your independent practitioner as a family. Not only will the optometrist be able to recommend suitable eyewear for your child, but frequent visits also establish the importance of eye health amongst the young. Children will be prompted to visit their optician as often as visiting their dentist, which will result in maintaining pro-longed eye health.”
